1. 문제제기
뉴 커뮤니케이션 테크놀로지의 발전에 따른 다채널 TV 환경과 리모컨의 대중화는 과거 어느 때 보다 더 빈번한 TV 채널변경행위(channel switching behavior)를 유발하고 있다. 일상화된 채널변경행위는 시청자와 TV 산업 모두에 엄청난 변화를 초래했다(Selnow, 1989). 먼저, 시청자 측면에서 다채널 TV 환경은 시청자들이 특정 채널의 특정 프로그램을 선택하여 시청하는 것을 더욱 복잡하게 만들었을 뿐만 아니라 특정 시간대에 특정 채널에서 방송되는 특정 프로그램을 인식하는 것 또한 더욱 어렵게 만들었다(Heeter, 1988; Heeter & Greenberg, 1988a, 1988b, 1988c, 1988d, 1988e). 산업적 측면에서 시청자들이 의식적이든 무의식적이든 수시로 채널을 바꾸는 행위는 광고, 마케팅 등을 포함한 프로모션 행위와(Eastman & Neal-Lunsford, 1983) 시청패턴, TV 편성 및 프로그램의 질(quality)까지도 변화시켰다(Gilbert, 1988). 또한 빈번한 채널변경행위로 인해 TV 방송사들은 광고주에게 충성스러운 고정시청자들을 제공할 수 없게 되었다(Walker & Bellamy, J.r., 1991, 1993).
시청자 입장에서 채널변경행위는 원치 않은 프로그램의 회피와 흥미로운 프로그램의 편리한 탐색 및 다수 프로그램 동시 시청 등을 허용함으로써 보다 적극적인 TV 시청 관여를 의미할 수도 있지만(Walker & Bellamy, J.r., 1991, 1993), 산업적 측면에서 시청자들의 채널변경행위는 일종의 시청자 반란 행위이다(Speck & Elliott, 1997). 따라서 TV 방송사들은 채널변경행위를 최소화하기 위해서 노력하고 있으며, 시청자는 TV를 시청하는 도중에 채널 변경 방지 편성이나 광고들을 쉽게 접할 수 있다. 예를 들면, 미국의 메이저 방송사(ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX)들은 짧은 오프닝-크레디트 시퀀스, 강화된 엔딩-크레디트 및 프로그램들 사이에 방송되는 광고의 대폭적 축소 등을 통해서 오래 전부터 채널변경현상을 방지하려고 노력하고 있다(Zoglin, 1994). 하지만, 우리나라의 경우 미국과 같은 전문적인 채널 변경 방지 편성이나 광고는 없고, 대신 프로그램이 끝날 무렵이나 혹은 케이블 TV의 중간광고가 시작되기 직전 사회자나 진행자가 말하는 “채널을 바꾸지 마세요”나 “리모컨에 손대지 마세요” 등의 채널 변경 방지용 멘트를 가끔 들을 수 있다.
