#1[Edna Annie Proulx] is an American journalist and author. Proulx was born in Norwich, Connecticut. She attended Colby College for a short period later returned to college, studying at the University of Vermont and graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in History. She got her Master of Arts from Concordia University in 1973. Starting as a journalist, she first published work of fiction, "The Customs Lounge", a science fiction story published in the September 1963 issue of If, under the byline "E.A. Proulx". She subsequently published stories and eventually her first short story collection, Heart Songs and Other stories appeared in 1988, followed in 1992 by Postcards, which won the 1993 PEN/Faulkner Award for fiction. And with her second novel, “Shipping News” she won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award for fiction in 1994. Proulx has twice won the O. Henry Prize for the year's best short story. In 1998, she won for "Brokeback Mountain," which had appeared in The New Yorker. Proulx won again the following year for "The Mud Below.” Both appear in her 1999 collection of short stories, Close Range: Wyoming Stories. She has married and divorced three times, and has three sons and a daughter. In 1994, she moved to Wyoming, where she currently lives.
#2 Brokeback Mountain gained a great deal of attention before it was collected into her Close Range: Wyoming Stories. Recognizing that it was the strongest story in her collection, Proulx placed it at the end of the book. When the reviews of Close Range appeared, Brokeback Mountain was consistently singled out for its evocative detail and compelling narrative.
The story chronicles the relationship between Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist. Two men develops a deep love for each other but they are forced to live separate lives in an intolerant world.
Brokeback Mountain" begins in the present with Ennis Del Mar waking up in his trailer. He feels happy because he dreamed of Jack Twist the night before.
At this point, the narrative shifts to 1963, when he and Jack were both teenagers and they worked as sheep herders. Day after day, Ennis tends the camp while Jack herds the sheep and sleeps out on the mountain. One day, when Jack complains about his "commuting four hours a day," he accepts Ennis's offer to switch jobs.
