󰊲. Different Types of knowledge

1. Procedural or Declarative Knowledge

The first distinction is that between declarative knowledge and procedural knowledge. Declarative knowledge focuses on beliefs about relationship among variables. For example, greater price charged for a product would cause reduction in number of sales. Declarative knowledge can be stated in the expected correlations, or formulas relating concepts represented as variables.
Procedural knowledge focuses on relating sequence of steps to desired outcomes. An example of such procedural knowledge is the set of justified beliefs about the procedure that should be followed in a government organization in deciding on whom to award the contract for a specific area.
Declarative knowledge may be characterized as “know what,” whereas procedural knowledge may be viewed as “know how.” To further understand the difference between these two types of knowledge, let us consider the example of a hypothetical automobile-manufacturing firm. An instance of declarative knowledge in this context is the set of justified beliefs about the effect that the quality of each component would have on the final product. This could include the effect of quality on such feature as reliability, fuel consumption, and quality of the ride of particular model. An example of procedural knowledge would be the set of beliefs about the process used to assemble a particular car model.
