Recommendation
1) Overall management
In terms of sustainability, Wal-Mart should hire more permanent employees rather than temporary workers and increase benefits because the company's growth strategy could be effectively attained with more qualified employees. Also, commitment to the community (local and global) may be rewarded by impressed customers. Besides price, many customers are concerned about the environment. By urging suppliers to supply eco-friendly products and by advertising the fact that Wal-Mart provides eco-friendly products, the company could improve brand value and attract more customers. Initially, this strategy will cost more but in the long term Wal-Mart will be compensated.
With an increasing volume of sales, Wal-Mart should improve logistics such as trucking and shipping by developing more advanced IT infra-system.
Emphasizing its high brand value and reputation for low price and convenience is needed to increase sales and market share in the fiercely competitive market place.
2) Domestic competition
Wal-Mart is focusing on the supercenter strategy, stocking large number of items embracing virtually every kind of consumer product. This strategy could be attractive to the customers who like one-stop shopping, but it also made it more difficult for Wal-Mart to compete with specialty stores such as Best Buy for consumer electronics and Home Depot for home-renovation materials. Wal-Mart could sell low-priced television, but customers who want high end products would shop at Best Buy with higher margins left to the Best Buy.
