2-3. The Subject Matters of the Seventh Curriculum.
Comprehensive subject matters are added to the curriculum to promote autonomy, creativity, and variety of making materials. The general principle of selecting subject matter is that subject matters should
① take the interests, needs motivation and proficiency level of students into account.
② reflect topics, situations and tasks.
③ be appropriate to the achievement standards.
④ be adequate to further and advanced learning.
Ⅲ. Methodology
3-1. The Purpose of Research
Textbooks have been changed according to the revised curriculums. Once they were applied to schools, however, there have always been some dissatisfactory opinions. We investigated what overall attitudes of students and teachers toward the textbook revised by the seventh curriculum are, in four aspects.
3-2. The Subjects and Procedures
There are two groups of students responding to our research; one is Imae Middle School located in Pundang, Kyeonggi province and the other is Nonhyeon Middle School in Nonhyeon, Incheon. The former is using textbooks made by Dusan-Jang and the latter is using Kyohak-Sa. In case of teacher groups, we had to involve more schools because there are about 6 to 10 English teachers per one school. 20 teachers who are using Dusan-Jang and 12 teachers who are using Kyohak-Sa took part in our research and they are working in schools in Seoul, Incheon, and Kyeonggi. In analyzing the result, we did not consider proficiency level and gender of students, regional differences. All of the students and teachers were asked to answer our questionnaire. The questionnaire involves questions dealing with four main categories; subject matter, exercises, vocabulary/structure, and illustrations. The questionnaire is
