3. Genre paintings in Korea

There are various types of Korean genre painting dating back from the pre-history period to the Joseon dynasty.
It can be classified to 3 types depending on characteristic

Genre Painting on Religion
Korean genre painting started from the pre-historic period, appearing in the ancient tomb mural of the Three Kingdoms, ancient tomb mural of Balhae’s period, and Gamlodo of Joseon dynasty. Pre-historic rock paintings represent people’s life in the past. It does not only records actual life but also carves people’s beliefs into the painting. For example, rock painting has plenty of hunted animals, and it shows people’s prayers for a safe and plentiful hunting. This particular way to pray resulted in many genre paintings, especially of animals, as it was probably one of the ways people cope with reality.

Genre Painting on Politics
Korean genre paintings are made from 빈풍칠월도류 회화 in the Goryeo dynasty to 빈풍칠월도류 회화 in the Joseon dynasty, 삼강행실도류 판화 for the ruler’s political purpose. Looking at life from a political point, it represents how the common people should live. There are lots of paintings that are political; amongst them, the most important genre painting is in the 삼강행실도. Kings try to make people to be loyal so as to create an orderly state.

Genre Painting on Popular Living
Korean genre paintings, particularly from the eighteenth century, are esteemed for their candid, realistic representations of the Joseon dynasty (1392–1910) and are considered by many as among the most "Korean" of all Korean art forms. Genre paintings existed in Korea prior to the eighteenth century; these works, however, were generally idealised images of yangban (literati; ruling elite) life. In the eighteenth century, the subject matter shifted away from the yangban to the commoner. Interestingly, literati artists from the upper class were the first to bring attention to the activities of the non-elite and, as a result, were catalysts for this shift.
