There are a few major competitors in the home console industry. The biggest competitor is said to be Sony whose series of products, PlayStation has been a steady seller in the industry. One of the oldest competitors was Sega, a big rival to Nintendo, which unfortunately couldn't stand fierce competition and terminated its console business in 2002. After Sega quit its business, its place was replaced by Microsoft who entered the game industry relatively later than the others. To analyze Nintendo's competitors, it is better to understand the history of home console industry.

II . 4. History of video game console industry

1st Generation
The history of game console industry, which started in 1970s, can be divided into seven generations till now based on technology and trends. The birth of home console happened in 1972. Magnavox released its first game console, Magnavox Odyssey. This incidence is significant because the birth of game console initiated consumer market.

2nd Generation
The most important event in this generation is that, in 1976, the Fairchild Video Entertainment System(VES) was released. The reason why this is important is that it used the cartridge as game storage device for the first time. Of course, cartridge had been used before by other consoles, but not for storage use.

3rd Generation
In 1983, Nintendo released its first game console, Famicom, which later was renamed Nintendo Entertainment System in 1985 when released in the United States market. Famicom provided detailed graphics and high resolution. Its software, Super Mario Bros, which has become one of the world's most famous characters, was a big hit, selling 40.2 million copies. Also this is the generation where Sega released its first console, Sega Master System, in 1986. However, it was merely a threat to Nintendo because units of Famicom sold was 60 millions whereas units of Sega Master System sold was 13 millions.

4th Generation
The fourth generation is known as 16-bit era. The game consoles in this generation showed improved graphics and resolution. This generation started when Sega released Mega Drive in 1988. Sega gained a significant market share by releasing this model. The Mega Drive became a big success in 1991 with its software, Sonic the Hedgehog, which became popular and famous rival of Nintendo's Mario. Two years from the release of Sega Mega Drive, Nintendo released its next console, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, which sold 49.1 million copies. Also, Nintendo's Game Boy, the first handheld console of Nintendo was released in the fourth generation. The Game Boy was a huge success, selling 118.7 million copies till now.

5th Generation
This is the era when Sony entered the market with PlayStation in 1994. Unlike other consoles, Sony PlayStation
