Southwest 항공사는 인적자원과 기업문화에서 여전히 경쟁력이 있다. 경쟁우위는 상대적인 것으로써, Southwest 항공사가 현재 처해있는 시장에서의 위치와 내부 경영자원을 점검함으로써 지금까지 기업을 성공적으로 이끌었던 요소들이 여전히 유효한지를 파악할 수 있다.
Southwest의 회장, Rollin W. King은 시장을 재 정의하여, 미국 내 대부분의 다른 항공사들과 같이 업계 선두를 달리고 있는 대형항공사들과 경쟁하는 것이 아니라 경쟁의 기준을 한 단계 아래의 고속버스와 철도회사로 낮추어 그들이 장악하고 있던 시장을 공략하였다. 틈새시장을 공략하기 위하여 Southwest 항공사는 비용 절감을 최우선 목표로 하였으며 독특한 고객만족 서비스를 제공하였다.

Also to be an airline carrier that has the most productive workforce to guarantee the best flight possible for each and every passenger.”
