In reader/writer mode, the NFC device is capable of reading NFC Forum mandated tag types, such as in the scenario of reading an NFC Smartposter tag. The reader/writer mode is on the RF interface compliant to the ISO 14443 and FeliCa
schemes. In Reader mode, NFC devices can read tags. This is most similar to how barcode scanning works today. For example, you can scan a barcode with an app on your mobile phone to access additional information.
(3)Card Emulation Mode
NFC has a mode called "card emulation" in which it can communicate with a RFID reader because it acts as an RFID card. For example, An NFC-enabled phone can be used in a payment application like a credit card to make payments. To pay, the user must touch the payment terminal with the phone. The NFC-enabled phone acts as a contactless card (chip-based credit card) to the payment terminal (reader) and so operates in card emulation mode.
4. Applications of NFC Technology
NFC is a recent development and many pilot tests are still going on throughout the world. It has a vast potential for use in many different applications, some of which are:

Contactless payment of tickets while using buses, taxis or railways can be done. Check-in and checkout can easily be done merely by using the mobile phone to touch the NFC tags. The amount will be debited to the source of payment immediately.
