본문내용
1. Monolayer of molecules formed by self-assembly ie., the structures are formed
without external intervention.
2. The structure is organized by utilizing weak interactions such as
H-bonding, van der Waals interactions and there are numerous
interactions of this kind in a structure which make it stable.
3. Nature uses the same process of self-assembly to produce complex
architectures; one such example is the formation of cell membrane from
lipid molecules through self-assembly.
Contact angle goniometry(CAG):
- examine hydrophilicity or hydrophobicity of a surface
X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS):
- testify bond types / define chemical species and oxidation states
- demonstrate that the film is of single monolayer thickness.
Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR):
- measure the vibrational frequencies of bonds
- yield a pictures of relative order and fraction of chain defects
Scanning probe microscopes: STM;AFM;LFM
greatly assisted in the patterning of SAMs by analyzing the spatial distribution of adsorbates across a surface.
