Abstract

Bioethanol is one of the alternative sources of oil resources which received attention with biodiesel. Many countries produce bioethanol from food sources such as corn and sugarcane, but it causes food-energy conflicts and farmland problem. So it needs to focus on new biomass which is sustainable, renewable, cost-effective and do not occurred any conflicts. Algae are one of the biomass for solving the problem of biofuel production, and it can be used not only for biodiesel production but also for bioethanol production. Bioethanol can be produced by starch from algae through hydrolyze, pre-treatment and fermentation process, After algae produce sugar or starch from carbon dioxide, sunlight and water, those free complex carbohydrates turned into fermentable sources through pre-treatment process - saccharification. Then, it can be changed ethanol form through fermentation by yeast or genetically engineered E.coli and we can produce biofuel from that ethanol. Now, the way of decreasing process and cost are studied from a few researchers. So we will show the whole process of the production of bioethanol from algae, and we suggest some solutions for reducing cost and the process focused on starch storage in algae cultivation and fermentation process.
