1. Introduction
1.1. Purpose of the Research
English has become the global language used nowadays in commerce, cultural exchanges as well human and diplomatic relations. Hence, English education has become a very important issue for nations all over the world. South Korea as a monolingual country has found in English language a convenient access to the world and this is one of the reasons why the government has put a great emphasis in English education. Developments in this area have been abundant and among them we can mention the establishment of the so-called “English Villages”, which shall be analyzed in this paper.
First, the concept and purposes of the English Villages will be introduced. Second, we have looked for opinions of professionals in favor and against the establishment of this system, which had ultimately shaped the hypothesis of our work. Third, in order to verify or reject the hypothesis, we have looked into previous studies and at the same time applied the results made from survey, interviews, and direct observations of the programs in the English Villages, as instruments of data collection. The targets of the study are the English Village in Pungnap, English Camp and Kwanak English Camp in Seoul and the Paju English Camp in Kyunggido.
