혈종 (hematoma)이란 피가 흐르지 못하고 고여서 만든 덩어리를 말한다.
혈관 밖으로 피가 흘러 나와서 그 혈액이 신체의 조직에 고여서 이루게 된다.
장기나 조직 속에 몇 mℓ 이상이 출혈하여 한 곳에 혈액이 괸 상태. 두피혈종(頭皮血腫) ·두개내혈종 ·피하혈종 ·관절내혈종 등이 모두 이것이다. 대개 혈액은 응고하지 않고 유동성을 가지며, 암적색을 띤다. 주사기로 흡인제거하고 압박해두면 대부분은 치유되지만, 때로는 몇 번이나 반복하여 흡인해야 할 경우도 있다. 반복해서 혈종을 만드는 경우에는 동맥류 ·동정맥류 등의 존재를 생각해 보아야 한다
종류로는 다양하지만 두피혈종(頭皮血腫), 두개내혈종, 피하혈종, 관절내혈종 등이 모두 이에 포함된다. 위키피디아에 따르면 종류는 수많이 있다. 예를 들어

이러한 종류가 있는데 주로 피부에서 보는 멍과 같은 hematoma와 뇌와 머리에 생기는 혈종 또는 귀나 항문 손톱에 생기는 혈종을 hematoma에 포함시킨다.
2. 두혈종 cephalhematoma
두부에 생긴 혈종.뇌혈종이라고도 한다. 두개(頭蓋)는 안쪽으로부터 골막 ·모상건막 ·두피로 덮여 있는데, 두부에 강한 힘이 가해지면 이들 조직에, 또는 조직과 조직 사이에 혈액이 유출되어 혈종이 형성된다. 외상으로 인하여 두피 안의 혈관이 손상되어 생기는 것으로서 며칠 지나면 자연흡수되거나 소실된다.
