Ⅰ Introduction
1. Meaning of History Education
History education is an activity of teaching history and using history as a material. One of the biggest goals in education of history is to understand the past activities in life and find out how it has implicated today’s society. Also, it is an intended activity to change students into a person who has desirable historical attitudes and values.
2. Purpose of History Education
The reason for educating history is for intrinsic values of history education. It helps students learn about themselves and the world around them. Therefore, history works as a bridge to help connect oneself to the past. Another reason is for students to earn historical lessons through learning history. Since history is a liberal arts course, learning history is needed as background knowledge to learn other crucial fields of study. Moreover, history is taught to build national identity of people and to develop historical consciousness.
3. Methods of History Education
What is most important in teaching history is the development and organization of instruction model. We can divide the models as instructor-led, question & answer, research, discussion, role-playing, simulation, and making by the teaching & learning method. By the context, we can divide the models as facts learning, concept learning, thematic learning, learning by era, learning by characters, and learning by comparison.
Instructor-led learning
It is the way of teaching by a teacher, describing to the students the historical ideas, characters, systems and historical affairs. It is often used to deliver knowledge in a short period of time or to give facts about history which is not in dispute.
Question & Answer
It is a conversation-like method to teach history including a teacher and students.
