The Process of Drawing a Hypothesis
We see people in subway or bus using Smartphones every day. Most of them look at webtoons to kill time while they are on the move. Webtoons are in their everyday life and people make movies, soap operas and plays based on those popular ones and character products featuring main Webtoon caracters, which give Webtoon unlimited market value.
Then, why is Webtoon so popular in Korea, and not in the United States or Japan, where comics industry is highly developed? We started this research with this question. The first independent variable that we came up with was the distribution of Smartphones. The appearance of Smartphone made the screens bigger and its portability enabled us to look at it any where at any time. For example, office workers can look at it while they commute and students during break time. Also, since we can access to Internet easily on Smartphones, the users exchange information about Webtoons through SNS and webtoonists get reader’s reaction and evaluation about their work in real time, which stimulate two-way communication between them. We expect that if we find the main reason for its popularity, we can establish effective overseas market strategy as well.
First, we set the its popularity as dependent variable and the diffusion of Smartphone as independent variable. Next up is theoretical definition of each variable. Webtoon is compound word, which is formed from ‘Web’ and ‘Cartoon’. It means comics posted online. In this paper, we are going to use the official name ‘Online cartoon’. Smartphone combines the functions of a personal digital assistant with a mobile phone. It also has the functionality of portable media players, web browsers, etc.
