1. INTRODUCTION
1-1. Problematique of Our Research
Basically, Sociology is based on studying a human society. So If we study sociology in Korea, of course, the sociological significant should focus on Korean society. but, it was biased toward theoretical universality and did not focus on Korean specificity and excessively depended on Western, especially American theory and methodology. Theory made by foreign sociology didn’t explain Korea society accurately. Because it deepened not only incongruity between foreign theory and Korean reality but also subordination. Actually, Many Korean sociologists have criticized academic dependency. However, their criticisms and alternatives have focused on macro-explanation. And it is on a kind of abstract level not realistic level.
So asking totally, we make a one question. - "Do we have sufficient competence to make relevant explanation on Korean society?" From this question, we are trying to start the discussion. We narrow the object of research and we concentrated on Department of Sociology in Korea University. Our study is made as a part of an attempt to explore the Euro- centrism in Sociology of Korea Univ.
1-2. Definition of Euro-centrism
First of all, we define Euro-centrism as a kind of manipulating definition. Euro-centrism is perspective or world-view which has western world as standard of comparison. As a broad definition, it means that euro-centric perspective is systemized in not only academic field, but also academic discipline such as evaluation and education.
