I. The History of MTV
1. Phase 1 (1981-1983)
MTV was lauched on August 1st. 1981, and it became one of the most successful cable television channels in history. It came with the first music video "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles. The new channel was started by a company called Warner Amex Satellite Entertainment Company, after they had done extensive market research to see what the people wanted to see. In the beginning, it was structured just like radio, with rotation lists for songs.(The more popular a song was the heavier the rotation of the video) At first the videos were given to MTV by the record companies, because they felt that it would act as promotion for their bands or artists. It lasted from the initial conception of MTV to around 1983.
2. Phase 2 (1983-1986)
Phase 2 lasted from 1983 to around 1986. What culminated the phrase 2 launch is when MTV became available in Manhattan and Los Angeles. MTV was a channel that appeared to a younger, and more hip generation. So to be fair to the artists of a softer rock and more contemporary type of music, Video Hits One was started, and more commonly known as VH1. VH1 was intended to appeal to an older audience who listened to softer rock; something that would have never fir into MTV's programming.
