Group 1: Grasping journalistic concepts in India’s sexual harassment case
Background of the ‘Bus sexual harassment’ issue
In September last year, there was an issue brought up as a major strike was held to raise the voice against the mass rape done by six guys to a female college student in a bus in New Delhi. Even India’s Prime Minister has also written a sincere apology that he would work hard to guarantee the security for the citizens and prevention of such incidents from ever occurring again, in order to result in a huge issue not only within India but also around the world; however, a few months later, the same mass rape occurred, and India again became a hot potato for severe criticism.
With this issue, India’s rape problem has risen as the most urgent social issue; however, for such miserable incidents to successively happen, India’s conventional historical background and culture, social, political atmosphere are all interrelated, and they should be taken into consideration collectively.
The Code of Manu, the scriptures of Hinduism—in which 85% of the whole 1.3 billion populations believe—strongly states that women’s role is to obey men along with the caste system. Looking at the women’s social status with the perspective of caste system, it is equivalent to the lowest class, Sudra. Such a conventional historical background maximizes the gender discrimination within the society. Moreover, the resulting national perception further deteriorates the issue of sexual assault in India.
