I. Phrasal verb
1. Phrasal verb의 정의
(1) Phrasal verb의 3 가지 정의
➀ The phrasal verb consists of a verb followed by a function word that may also function in English sentences as a preposition. (동사와 전치사의 기능을 가지는 function word로 이루어진 어구)
➁ The phrasal verb is a semantic unit having a meaning which differs from the sum of meanings of its individual parts. (각 단어의 의미의 합과는 다른 새로운 의미를 지니는 동사구)
➂The phrasal verb is a grammatical unit which fulfills normal verb functions in English sentences. It may or may not be followed by a noun object. (동사와 같은 기능, 목적어를 수반할 수도 그렇지 않을 수도 있음)
(2) Idiom과의 구별
American Heritage Dictionary의 Idiom에 관한 정의를 살펴보면 Idiom은 “A speech form or an expression of a given language that is peculiar to itself grammatically or cannot be understood from the individual meanings of its elements, as in keep tabs on" 이라고 정의되어 있다.
일반적으로 Phrasal verb는 Two-word verb(이어 동사)라는 다른 명칭처럼 대개 하나의 동사와 다른 하나의 particle로 이루어져 있지만 Idiom은 보통 길이가 길며(즉, 두 개 이상으로 이루어져 있으며) 명사가 많이 포함되어 있는 경향이 있다.
가령 American Heritage Dictionary 에 의하면 동사 “look”의 경우, look after/look for/look into/look on (or upon)/look out/look over/look to/look up은 Phrasal verb로 분류가 되어있고 look a gift horse in the mouth/look alive (or sharp)/look down on (or upon)/look down (one's) nose at (or on)/look forward to/look in on/look the
