형태소는 최소 언어부호라고 정의할 수 있으며 이는 음과 의미의 자의적 결합으로 더 이상 쪼개질 수 없는 문법단위다. 그리고 단어의 내부 구조에 대한 연구 및 단어의 형성 규칙에 대한 연구를 형태론이라고 한다.
