3) Population Aging
As a result, this combined effect of increasing lifeexpectancy and decreasing fertility causes population aging. Figure 3 shows the proportion of population in the developed and developing county at aged 65. We can know the proportion of elderly is growing worldwide and then, this proportion will be continually increasing in the future.
Figure3. Percentage of World’s Pop
Reason for the increasing proportion of older people
The improved care of expectant mother and newborn infants has “reduced the infant mortality rate”
New drugs, better sanitation, and other medical advances have “increased lifeexpectancy”
: Male 58.7>75.6, Female 65.6>83.3 (1970>2008)
Especially, in Korea
The birthrate is rapidly declining >>

(2) Long Term Care in Korea
In July 2008, Korea introduced social insurance for long-term care. There are several
important demographic and social changes leading to the introduction of long-term care
(LTC) insurance, including the rapid ageing of population as a result of the increase in lifeexpectancy and the sharp decline in fertility. Total fertility rate is below 1.1 in 2005 (NSO,2007).
