신화를 뜻하는 myth는 그리스어의 mythos에서 유래하는데, 논리적인 사고 내지 그 결과의 언어적 표현인 로고스(logos)의 상대어로서, 사실 그 자체에 관계하면서 그 뒤에 숨은 깊은 뜻을 포함하는 ‘신성한 서술(敍述)’이
