passion and affections for Miss Rosamond.
Jane - asks why he does not just marry her.
St. John – says that he is very much in love with Rosamond; but he knows that Miss Rosamond would not be suited to be a missionary's wife. He insists that he is a cold, hard man who is not willing to give up his ambitions for God, for love. He remarks that Jane is original and direct in her manner
“You ask how it feels to be a deceived husband. Just Heavens, I do not know. It feels just nothing at all. It is not Hell, certainly it is not necessarily Heaven. […] But what were they? The just?
