점토는 천연적인 여러 암석이 풍화 또는 분해에 의해 생긴 미세한 알루미늄 규산염을 주성분으로 한 토상(土狀) 혼합물로 가수(加水)하여 반죽하면 점성이 생기고, 건조하면 강성을 나타내며 충분한 고온에서 구우면 경화되는 것을 말한다.
