Piezoelectric crystal, e.g. Quartz and PLZT (Pb, La,
Zr, TiOx) are well known for their sensitivity to
pressure on their crystal surfaces. In addition,
the oscillating frequency of a piezoelectrc crystal
decreases on adsorption of a foreign substance
onto its surface.
The variation of oscillating frequency is
proportional to the mass of foreign
molecules deposited on the crystal surf
QCM).[5] In first approximation cantilevers behave like a harmonic oscillator, and the mass change on a rectangular cantilever will produce a reduction on the resonance frequency, which can be estimated from:
