i. About Groupon

Groupon, coined from the two words "group" and "coupon" is a "deal of the day" website that offers discounts on products and services. Groupon is a deal-of-the-day website that is localized to major markets in the United States and Canada. Launched in November 2008, the first market for Groupon was Chicago, followed soon thereafter by Boston and New York City and Toronto. Now, Groupon serves more than 500 markets and 44 countries, including North America, Europe, Asia and South America.

The site provides deals for specific cities so that users can find a great deal near them. Groupon is aimed at the Internet-savvy, social media set and uses large social networking sites like Twitter.com to give "early bird" notices on the Groupon it will be offering.

The idea for Groupon was created by CEO Andrew Mason in 2008. Groupon is experiencing phenomenal growth with projected revenue of $500 million for 2010. No tech company (including Amazon, Ebay, Yahoo, or even Google) has experienced this kind of growth. At just under 2 years old in April of 2010, the company was valued at $1.35 billion. Groupon also owns several international operations, all of which were originally deal-of-the-day services similar to it, but then re-branded under the Groupon name after acquisition.
