1. In the last 200 years, the history of the Maori language (te reo Maori) has been one of ups and downs. At the beginning of the 19th century, it was the predominant language spoken in Aotearoa(the Maori name for New Zealand).

지난 200년 동안 마오리 언어(te reo Maori) 의 역사는 흥망성쇠를 겪어왔다. 19세기 초, 마오리어는 Aotearoa(뉴질랜드의 마오리식 명칭)에서 지배적인 언어였다.

As more English speakers arrived in New Zealand, the maori language was increasingly confined to Maori communities. By the mid-20th century, there were concerns that the language was dying out.

뉴질랜드에 들어오는 영어 사용자가 많아지면서 마오리 언어는 점점 마오리 공동체에로 사용이 한정되었다. 20세기 중반, 이 언어가 소멸될 것이라는 우려가 제기되었다.
Major initiatives launched from the 1980s have brought about a revival of the Maori language. In the early 21st century, more than 130,000 people of Maori ethnicity could speak and understand Maori, one of the three official languages of New Zealand.

1980년대부터 등장한 주요 계획이 마오리어의 부활을 불러일으켰다. 21세기 초, 13만명 이상의 마오리 민족이 뉴질랜드의 세 가지 공용어 중 하나인 마오리어를 듣고 말할 수 있었다.
