1960년대 중반 마셜 니런버그, 로버트 홀리, 고빈드 코라나 등은 DNA의 유전정보를 이용해 아미노산이 어떻게 단백질로 합성되는지를 밝혀 유전 연구에 박차를 가했다. 세 사람은 1968년 노벨생리의학상을 받았다.
