hwpI've coincidentally come across African-American songs on the internet. Even though I couldn't fully understand their language, the poignant stories woven into the songs touched me deeply. These stories portrayed the struggles of black individuals who were forcibly migrated to the New World and had to live there. "Hidden Figures" tells the story of brilliant black women working at NASA in the 1960s during the intense space competition between the United States and the Soviet Union. The movie centers around Katherine Johnson, a mathematically gifted black woman, Dorothy Vaughan, a leader and programmer among the black women at NASA, and Mary Jackson, a black woman aspiring to become NASA's first female engineer.
During the 1960s, racial discrimination was rampant in the United States to the extent that black people were just beginning to gain civil rights. Even at NASA, the main characters were not allowed to use the same cafeteria or coffee pot as their white colleagues, solely based on their skin color. Despite their genius, these three black women were relegated to the role of human computers at NASA.
Amidst this, Harrison, their supervisor, recognized Katherine's mathematical talent and appointed her as one of the executives in charge of space development. One of the most impactful scenes in the movie was when Katherine had to walk for 40 minutes, wearing high heels and a skirt, to reach the restroom located 800 meters away. Eventually, after learning the truth, Harrison destroys the sign indicating a "Whites Only" restroom. He leaves behind a memorable quote:
"At NASA, we all pee the same color."
In the latter part of the movie, as the launch of the manned spacecraft approaches, an IBM computer malfunctions. Despite the introduction of computers potentially rendering them obsolete, Harrison calls upon Katherine once again for her assistance. This showcases Katherine's talents and represents a triumphant moment for humanity.
Even in the 21st century, racial discrimination persists. Last year, the death of George Floyd, an African-American man, at the hands of white police officers sparked the global Black Lives Matter movement. Moreover, due to the COVID-19 pandemic originating in China, discrimination against Asians has escalated. I, too, have experienced a form of racial harassment from a British coworker, leading me to take a leave of absence. This made me resonate with the protagonist's experiences. Thus, I wish to dedicate this movie to the entire world, hoping that the evil of discriminating against people based on their skin color will never happen again.
