1734년 적절한 영어 사용에 대한 문법책을 처음 발행한 사람은 Willam Loughton이다.
This was followed by Joseph Priestley's attempt at establishing grammar rules in his Rudiments of English Grammar(1761).
이것은 영문법의 Rudiments에 문법 성립에 Joseph의 시도로 이어 졌다.(1761)
Priestly's grammar was not nearly as famous as his later scientific work and his discovery of oxygen.

A third grammar text followed in 1762. All of these works based grammar rules on the writer's opinions of correct usage of the language rather than linguistic analysis of how people actually used the language.
