II. Deploying Wiki
1. Laying out the infrastructure
We allocated many times to find Korean-based wiki platform but couldn’t find it in the end. So get a hosting service provided by ‘wiki spaces’. Then we started initial construction. Because our page is about restaurant in KU gathering information was first thing we had to. We tried to get information from various sources to improve accuracy of information. Of course we referred ‘Koreapas.com’ and many internet site specially blogs which contain relevant information but we wanted to contain every restaurant around KU so we divided neighborhood into 4 areas then started to visit each restaurant and recorded information. Even concrete information of small and not popular restaurants (but to some people there also were place of their precious memory) we could find out when we actually visited and checked out every single place. Approximately, more than 30% of the restaurant in the KU vicinity contained no information via web. Gathering information on foot was sometimes hard but to find out unknown restaurant to internet user seemed worthwhile.
2. Collecting Initial Data
Four regions that have been categorized were namely, main gate, rear gate of law department, rear gate of economic department and Chamsarigil. As of this point, the four restaurant list pages representing each regions and the alphabetized list of restaurants links to individual pages had been created. Individual restaurant pages where visitors could actually contribute had been deliberately left empty.
3. Information inserted to pages
After list of restaurants was fully set up we started to fill up information in front page. To help visitor understand about wiki concept and how to use it we briefly notated about wiki and technical instructions on editing. On the left side 4 main categories were deployed. Also on the right side we put table of contents to enhance level of convenience. Given the characteristics of wiki when much information are contained in one page existence of ‘table of contents’ is essential and can help visitor find information quickly and accurately.
If visitor click ‘front gate’ they can see list of restaurant located in front gate in alphabetical order. To encourage (so we thought) visitors to contribute more actively such as creating new pages or fixing errors, we decided not to add every restaurants on the list pages. Several of the most popular restaurants have been left out and few misprints were intentionally not corrected. Total of 24 restaurants are listed in the 정문, 13 restaurants in 법대후문, 59 restaurants in 정대후문 and finally 105 restaurants in 참살이길 are listed.
