Synthesize nitrobenzene by nitration of benzene with mixed acid as one of the EAS’s example

Understand basic operation of concussion mixing, heating, cooling, and drying liquid.


Electrophile
a reagent attracted to electrons that participates in a chemical reaction by accepting an electron pair in order to bond to a nucleophile.

Substitution reaction
a functional group in a particular chemical compound is replaced by another group.


Place 34ml of concentrated nitric acid in a 500 ml Round Bottomed 3 Neck Flask, and slowly shaking for cooling.

Add slowly 40ml of concentrated sulfuric acid.

Place a thermometer in this nitrating mixture, and then add very slowly 36ml of benzene. after each addition, the contents of the flask thoroughly mixed* This should be added about 3ml at a time,* The temperature of the mixture must not be allowed to rise above 50’C, and should be kept under control if necessary by immersing the flask in cold water.
