Foreigners or Non-natives
There is a word Thai people use to refer to Westerners: “Farang.” This word alone only means “Westerner,” but it is usually associated with negative meanings. For example, “farang keenok” literally means “bird excrement westerner” and it really means a western foreigner who is not reliable or trustworthy. This word shows that some Thai people may be prejudiced against western foreigners. However, we cannot say that all the Thai people are prejudiced against foreigners nor can we say that Thais are prejudiced against all foreigners.
There are many people who travel to Thailand and some people meet Thais who are polite, friendly and peaceful. On the other hand, some people run into Thais who try to sell something for a ridiculous price. What we can make out of this is that each Thai has his or her own values and show different attitudes toward foreigners. This means that we also shouldn’t judge Thai people based on a stereotype.
