Ⅰ. Introduction
This case illustrates the current state, competitive advantages, and rising threats of Samsung Electronics in the semiconductor industry. Samsung specializes in the production of memory chips, which is one of the two broad categories of the semiconductor product. Although Samsung is currently the world’s leading producer of these three types of memory chips, the threat of Chinese companies entering the market is an aspect that has many experts believing Samsung’s time may be up. Chinese firms are beginning to compete in the market segment for older product lines with low prices, hoping to gain market share. Although these competitors are not yet equipped with the technological capabilities in comparison with leading companies in the industry, Chinese firms have acquired various ways of financing from outer sources (including overseas investors and government organizations) and boast numerous talented engineers. Thus, they have the potential to challenge Samsung as a market leader, if not in the short term, then in the long term.
