Ⅲ Flocculation
The purpose of flocculation is to uniformly mix coagulated water to produce either settleable or filterable floc and accelerate the rate of particle collisions, causing the agglomeration of electrolytically destabilized colloidal particles into settleable and filterable sizes.
Considerations of flocculation are:
1. Baffling to prevent of flow short-circuiting
2. Tapered mixing energy to control of floc size (high to low to prevent flocs breakage)
(1) The structure of flocculator
There are five types of flocculator. We choose mechanical mixing type with vertical shaft with hydrofoil impellers. Hydrofoil impeller is a low cost alternative to propellers. Vertical impeller flocculator has high energy efficiency (it means less power is required) and has low shear stress (lower variation in G). Also it can compact flocs well and has less settling problem at the bottom. Direction of water flow by impeller rotation must be down to prevent settling, and motor is on the top of the tank for easy maintenance.
