I heard that de Maupassant is considered to be one of the greatest writers of the modern short story and the brevity of his stories is outstanding. That is the reason why I chose the Necklace, one of his widely-known works.

In the story, Mathilde Loisel is a beautiful and charming woman whose family was not rich. She was married to Monsieur Loisel, a lowly clerk in the Ministry of Education. Although she had always dreamed of a life of leisure, her husband could not afford to give her the extravagant lifestyle she desired. Monsieur Loisel tries his best to satisfy her but Mathilde feels the burden of her poverty and does nothing with her time other than imagining a more luxurious life.
