다중지능이론은 IQ 검사와 같은 단일 측정을 통해서 지능을 측정하는 것은 부적절하다는 것을 말하여 준다. 단일 측정치는 개인이 갖고 있는 다양한 능력을 정확하게 설명할 수 없기 때문이다. 특히 가드너는 지능을 연령과 다양한 계층에 대하여 같은 방법으로 진단할 수 없다고 주장한다.
