Formation of APEC – Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation(1989)

ASEAN’s integration to APEC was opposed by former Malaysian Prime Minister Dr. Mahathir bin Mohamad who proposed the EAEG – East Asia Economic Group(1990) (later named EAEC – East Asia Economic Caucus) which excluded the US

3. opposed by Japan under US pressure
The EAEC failed to be materialized but later became the ASEAN plus 3 summit (institutionalized in 1999 and was first brought up in 1997)
→ formation of East Asia Summit at the ASEAN plus 3 summit meeting of Kuala Lumpur on December 14, 2005
The emergence of an East Asian Community (an East Asian trading bloc) is expected to arise from either the grouping of ASEAN +3 or the East Asia Summit also referred to as ASEAN +6
From which grouping the EAC will come from is uncertain
Japan supports the ASEAN +6 grouping while Korea and China prefer the ASEAN +3 grouping
