3) Sensitivity to the Environment
In 2000, Apple experienced a rapid decrease in profit due to weakened iMac computers. Steven Jobs sought a new opportunity for growth and he found one in mp3 player market. Though the growth of the market was slowing down, he understood that people increasingly want to keep music closely and value emotional aspects in their lives. He identified these customers’ needs very well and Apple could come up with innovative iPod which was different from existing products. It was a total success that iPod has dominated the market, almost keeping a monopolistic position. He also realized the circumstances related to why and how music market had been depressed and opened a new market with iTunes to sell mp3. He knew what he and Apple could do well and couldn’t, so they could concentrate on designing and developing OS for their products, outsourcing many other activities.
4) Sensitivity to Member Needs
Steven Jobs want his employees to call himself as CLO(Chief Listening Officer). This shows that he emphasizes employees’ individual autonomy and capability, and by communicating with them, he could lead Apple to always come up with something new. He is well known for his efforts to memorize hundreds of employees’ email addresses and direct communication with them.
