C. Techniques and Procedures
1. Maintaining the Analytic Framework: maintaining the procedural and stylistic factors. (ex: regularity and consistency of meetings) The framework itself is a therapeutic factor.
2. Free Association: a technique to freely say whatever comes to mind. It opens the door to unconscious wishes, fantasies, conflicts, and motivations.
3. Dream Analysis: uncovers the unconscious and gives insight to some areas of unresolved problems. Through dreams, the unconscious wishes, needs, and fears are expressed.
4. Interpretation:
a. Resistance: any ideas, attitudes, feelings, and actions (conscious or unconscious) foster the status quo and gets in the way of change. (an unconscious defense against anxiety)
b. Transference: a process which the client projects one’s own feelings of a significant person towards the therapist. (unconscious act)

During the counseling process, the therapist observes certain behavior patterns of the client and identifies it as an act from the unconscious. Therefore, the therapist works on changing those behaviors. Some of the techniques used were maintaining the analytical framework, free association, dream analysis, and interpretation. The client can be able to talk freely through free association, the client’s resistance can be analyzed through interpretation, and the client can develop self-awareness through insight. The film also shows defense mechanism such as transference and projection.
On ethical issues, there are several occasions which seemed to be unethical. After a couple of therapy sessions, Susan asks Tom to be her son’s football coach. This request blurs the boundary between public and personal relations. When Susan and Tom argue, he involves her son into the argument as a threat. Another unethical problem is that the two become lovers. Susan and Tom meet each other outside of the therapeutic setting such as a party or dinner. They begin to flirt and share their feelings toward one another. In their last session, Tom fully opens up and reveals his secret. He is finally able to discuss his unresolved problem. After doing so, he bursts into tears and Susan comforts him by taking
