ABSTRACT
Solvent effect on the spectra has been widely investigated. We are conducting the research as well using 6-[(2,3-dihydroxybenzylidene)-amino]naphthalene-
2-sulfonic acid. Lots of Schiff base derived from salicylaldehyde and 2-hydroxynaphthaldehyde have been reported to show ESIPT (excited state intramolecular proton transfer). We measured the absorption, emission and excitation spectra of this compound in the several solvents. The shape of the absorption spectra is dependent on the solvent and the concentration. In the absorption spectra using dimethyl sulfoxide, dimethylformamide and ethylenediamine, two bands were observed. Considerable change was not observed but the absorbance showed a considerable difference. ESIPT was not observed using these solvents. In the ethylenediamine solution, neither the emission spectrum nor the excitation spectrum were observed. These results seemed from the basicity of the ethylenediamine. Also, we examined the effect of pH in the dimethylsulfoxide solution. At the higher pH, the intensities of spectra are shown to increase. In the near future, we want to investigate the effect of several metal ions.
