종이에 가로로 선을 그은 다음 왼쪽 끝에는 출생이라 적고 그 밑에 당신의 생일을 적는다. 반대쪽 끝에는 죽음을 적는다. 자 이제 가로로 선 중 오늘이라고 생각되는 곳에 점을 찍고 오늘의 날짜를 적는다. 그리고 오른쪽 끝에 당신이 생각하는 죽음의 날짜를 기입한다.
당신 스스로 죽을 날짜를 정하고 나니 기분이 어떠한가? 어떻게 그 날짜를 정하였는가? 당신과 다른 다양한 연령대의 사람들도 죽음에 대해서 당신과 같은 생각을 가지고 있을까? 당신은 내년 생일이 기다려지는가? 당신이 하고 싶은 것을 하기에 당신이 가진 시간을 얼마나 되는가? 나이든 노인들은 죽음에 대해서 어떻게 생각할까?
당신은 죽음에 대해 가족과 이야기해본 적이 있는가? 당신의 가족이나 친구 중에 훌륭한 죽음(good death)이나 장례, 화장준비에 대해 이야기하거나 죽음에 대한 그들의 생각을 이야기 한 적이 있는가? 이번 장에서는 노년의 죽음에 대해서 알아볼 것이다.

은 죽음을 대하는 태도는 각 사회마다 다르다고 이야기 한다. 어떤 사회에서 죽음은 투쟁의 대상이자 적으로 간주한 반면 다른 사회에서는 죽음을 더 좋은 세상으로 가는 것으로 생각하며 더없이 행복한 것으로 받아들이기도 한다. 또 다른 곳에서는 긍정도 부정도 아닌 죽음을 미스터리로 생각하기도 한다.

는 옛날을 그리워한다고 말했다. 그것도 아주 먼 옛날을… 그의 주장에 따르면 고대에는 죽음을 신비한 변화로 생각하였다. 그래서 그들은 죽음을 설명하기 위해 신화와 이야기들을 만들어냈다. 그리스의 하데스(Hades), 기독교의 천국과 지옥 그리고 무슬림의 파라다이스들은 고대인들의 죽음의 의미를 설명하기 위한 고뇌의 결과로 탄생한 것이라고 주장하였다. 또 어떤 사회에서는 죽음은 영원한 어둠과 그림자를 의미하기도 한다. 단테는 그의 작품 "신곡"에선 죽음을 사악한 삶의 처벌이라고 기술하였다. 반면 무슬림 신도들에게 죽음은 평안하고 즐거운 삶을 의미한다. Kastenbaum에 따르면 죽음은 무언가 엄청난 것임에는 틀림없다. 사람들은 그들의 문화와 종교를 통해 죽음의 기이함에 대해 이야기해왔다.
