“How does your life differ from Chris? Would you escape from society the way he did?”
Chris does not like anything materialistic. When his father tried to buy him a new car, Chris felt offended and refused the offer. Also, he escaped from the society to the wild because he didn’t want to be involved in the materialism. Although I was very impressed by his brave adventurous journey, I found Chris and I have totally different point of views and lives. I value money, career and relationships with people than he does. Plus, I wouldn’t escape from the society because I like it.
Money is unimportant to Chris. He doesn’t like the whole idea about people cannot be happy without money. To prove that, he takes a journey to the wild with no money. In an article titled, “Now I Walk Into the Wild,” written by Chip Brown, Chris burned his money when he started his journey. Plus, Chris wrote that, “Sometimes I wish I hadn’t met you though. Tramping is too easy with all this money. My days were more exciting when I was penniless and had to forage around for my next meal…” in his postcard to Westerberg. In addition, Chris refused Westerberg’s offer of the airplane ticket to Alaska because Chris enjoys his way of life without money. In my case, I’m not very materialistic but certainly need more money than Chris does. As long as I have a job, car and place to live, I’m fairly satisfied. I don’t have endless desire for money but admit I need it.
