I find the concept of data discovery especially fascinating because I realized during my work as a buyer that there is no position in the company that performs both a supporting role and isdirectlyinvolved with developing products; instead, each of these tasks was strictly divided between engineers who designedstructures and personnel like myself who supported their endeavors by implementing cost control measures and streamlining material procurement. As a data scientist, I could take on both roles, allowing me to makegreater contributions to the business by not only reducing costs and increasing a business operations efficiency, but also creating new lines of revenue through product development, which is the type of work that I hope to focus on during my career.Therefore, while pursuing my degree in ORIE, I would like to concentrate on learning how to incorporate statistical, mathematical and computer-based skills and techniques that would optimize the decision-making process and business operation efficiency, and lead to creative ideas to develop viable data-based products.
Realizing programming is one of the key elements for success in data science and development of data products, I learned basic principles of Java programming through UCLA Extensions online Java class. During this time, I not only learned the basic principles of programming, but I also developed a profound interest in computing and coding. I was fascinated by my newfound ability to order a computer to perform the tasks I intended to do. To further explore my interests and better prepare myself for my academic pursuit, I decided to leave my job to participate in a 6 month full-time IT training program offered bySoldesk, an IT educational institution sponsored by the ROK government. From the program, I learned how to construct complex algorithms and how to use SQL to store, query and manipulate data by gaining hands-on experience in Java, JSP, Android Studio, R, Linux, Oracle SQL andMySQL, and completingtwoteamprojects. For one of the projects, I came up with the idea to create a product I had imagined as an undergraduate.During this time, I was highly conscious of the need to spend my time productively.Therefore, when I started recording how long I spent studying every day, I was surprised to learn I was spending much less time than expected, because of continuous interruptions, such as phone calls, texts, and emails.I believed there would be many others who were also unaware of how they were spending their time.To help them improvetheirtime managementskills, I came up with anoutline for anapplicationthattracksthe amount of time a user spendsin eachtype oftask.Myconcept of the app was simple, quick and easyto use, and my teammates agreed to pursue it.
