The automobile industry deals with the whole process of providing cars to customers such as designing, developing, manufacturing, marketing, and selling. Producing an aggregate amount of over 70 million vehicles worldwide, the automobile industry has become one of the most prosperous industries since the mid twentieth century. It has also been the largest purchasers of key industrial products such as steel. Moreover in many countries the auto industry has generated huge employment effects which served as a strong drive toward economic growth. China and India which have benefited greatly from their exponentially booming vehicle market can be cited as an example of the extent to which the automobile industry can vitalize a country’s economy. However with the financial crisis that took off in the US in 2008 has led massive growth-cuts of the industry due to shrinking consumer demand. Furthermore the turbulent oil price and the growing environmental awareness have limited the growth of auto industry by pressurizing the industry towards a production trend of making smaller and energy-efficient automobiles which requires high R&D and production costs in contrast to its low returns rate. We investigated more deeply about two Asian automobile company; one Japanese and the other Korean.
Hyundai Motor is definitely one of the best managing motor companies in Korea. Hyundai Motor started its business at 1967 and since then, the company has been achieving significant result in local market. High market capitalization, market share, total assets, sales, net income, and cash flows from operations prove it. In the 1980s, it started to focus its business aim on export, especially the U.S. In 2008, despite the worldwide depression in car industry, Hyundai Motor made 3.0% market share in the state, which is 1% increase from 2007. With the management philosophy ‘creative challenge’, it challenged world’s markets. The company now has its branch or factory in everywhere from Australia to North America. Thanks to export diversification, the company showed 2.1% increased export sales in 2008.
