 AES Corporation:
The AES Corporation is the world’s largest independent company that generated and distributes electrical power. Spring 2002, the company encountered the most difficult business circumstances. AES were shocked by four external factors: ①the Californian power crisis of 2001 ②Enron’s collapse at the end of December 2001 ③the meltdown of the Argentine economy ④ terrorist attacks on the USA. These external factors affected AES negatively in finances, making it difficult to access the capital markets.
For AES, there was no other way but a reversal of strategy to protect itself against an increasingly hostile external environment. However, co-founder and CEO Dennis Bakke did not ignore his ambition to build AES as a different kind of company. He believed that the company already has potential to survive the financial pressures. Instead of focusing on profit and shareholder wealth, two co-founders, Roger Sant and Dennis Bakke, emphasized its unique management system which pursues integrity, fairness, fun, and social responsibility.
