In 1947, Andy Defresne, a promising young banker, is falsely accused and tried for the murders of his wife and her lover. He eventually found guilty and sent to Shawshank State Penitentiary. There, Andy quickly be friends with Red, another inmate who is serving a life sentence for murder. Andy asks Red for a rock hammer in order to further his hobby of hand-carving chess pieces. He also asks for and receives many posters of actresses.
