Introduction
What is EMR?
EMR(Electronic Medical Records) is a scanned digital version of a paper medical record. EMR System is a computer-based database system specific to one position or organization, and largely used to workers for diagnoses and treatment . It is a digital record that doctors keep on their own patients’ personal information, medical history, and diagnoses. The information of the individual typically integrates with the physicians’ practice management software system, and handles scheduling and billing.
There are two main types of EMR systems. First one is called ‘Server-based’ system. It is typically located on the practice premises on a specialized computer called ‘Server’. Second one is called ‘Web-based’ EMR system, which is generally located off site, on the EMR vendor company server. And the medical practice accesses it via the internet. SaaS(Software as a Service), and ASP(Application Service Provider) are usually interchangeable term of Web-based EMR. The chart below shows advantages and disadvantages of each type of EMR system.
