이 실험에서 사용한 HO-1은 hemeoxygenase-1 으로 heme이 빌리루빈으로 될 때 중요한 효소입니다. HO-2, HO-3은 항상 발현되는데에 비하여 HO-1은 산화적 스트레스에 의해 유도되어서 생깁니다. HO-1의 대사과정에서 CO가 생성되므로, HO-1을 처리했다는 것은 CO를 처리한 것과 같다고 볼 수 있습니다.
