“John Brown, Address to the Virginia Court (1859)”
John Brown, a religious man who wants to abolish slavery, fought with his sons in Virginia. Later, he was captured and sentenced to death. In his address to Virginia Court, he says that he did not intend to murder, destruct properties or raise rebellion. Furthermore, he stated that the Bible taught him to treat others well as they are supposed to treat you well. In addition, he said that, “Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them.” He insisted he had done nothing wrong. Then, he criticized unjustness by calling the country, Slave country which disregards the rights of people, using slavery.
Interestingly, he said that he was satisfied with the trial because it was more generous than he had thought. However, he had feelings that people had no guilt in their minds. He considered the court unjust because he had no intention to kill others, and did not commit treason nor excite slaves to rebel, and he rather discouraged people who wanted to rebel.
